چکیده

This study uses the GAINS model framework to estimate current and future emissions of the fluorinated greenhouse gases HFCs/HCFCs, PFCs and SF6 (F-gases), their abatement potentials and costs for twenty source sectors and 162 countries/regions, which are aggregated to produce global estimates. Global F-gas emissions are estimated at 0.95 Pg CO2eq in 2005 with an expected increase to 3.7 Pg CO2eq in 2050 if application of control technology remains at the current level. There are extensive opportunities to reduce emissions using existing technology and alternative substances with low global 10 warming potential. Estimates show that it would be technically feasible to reduce cumulative F-gas emissions by 86 percent between 2018 and 2050. A reduction in cumulative emissions by 72 percent is estimated possible at a marginal abatement cost below 10 €/t CO2eq. We also find that future F-gas abatement is expected to be relatively more costly for developing than for developed countries due to differences in the sector distribution of emissions and abatement potentials.

Cost-effective N2O, CH4 and NH3 abatement in European agriculture: interrelations between global warming and acidification policies

In Europe agriculture is an important contributor to emissions of the acidifying compound ammonia (NH3) and the greenhouse gases nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4). Measures to reduce one of these gases may also have an impact on emissions of the others. This study investigates the effects of control options for NH3, N2O, and CH4 that are available for the European agriculture on the emissio...

The Role of Global Land Use in Determining Greenhouse Gases Mitigation Costs

This paper develops a CGE model with unique regional land types and detailed non-CO2 GHG emissions which it uses to analyze the potential for reductions in land-based greenhouse gas emissions as well as forest sequestration. In our global, general equilibrium analysis of carbon taxation, we find that forest carbon sequestration is the dominant means for global GHG emissions reduction in the lan...

Low carbon transportation in Thailand: CO2 mitigation strategy in 2050

Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) involve the collaboration on reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developing countries with suitable countermeasures relevant to the state of technological and economic conditions prevalent in the country. This study proposes appropriate GHG countermeasures in Thai transport NAMAs, which are based on the implementation of transport dem...

Global Warming Potentials: A Cost-Effectiveness Approach

The Kyoto Protocol prescribes obligatory limits on the emission of greenhouse gases by the industrialized countries during the period 2008-2012. Six specific gases are covered. The Kyoto limits apply to an aggregate of emissions of the covered gases expressed in carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents, obtained by application of a "global warming potentials" (GWPs). In regard to concentrations, or sto...

What are the Gains from a Multi-Gas Strategy?

The Kyoto Protocol assigns limits for the aggregate emissions of six greenhouse gases, but most economic analyses focus on CO2 abatement. What are the potential gains if policy makers exploit the flexibility in a multi-gas abatement strategy? We extend the EDGE model to include sinks and non-CO2 gases and show that a multigas strategy reduces costs by 20-35% in the Western Annex B countries. Ma...
